Breeders Cup Classic Odds at Allpro, the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park.

Horse racing is all about gambling, but the Breeders’ Cup is one gamble that paid off for Thoroughbred horse racing. In the early 1980s, the sport was losing viewers and public interest except during the Triple Crown races. But those races were only open to three-year-olds. Why couldn’t there be a championship year-end race series open top horses from all over the world? Thoroughbred breeders such as John R. Gaines realized the Triple Crown was not enough to bring spectators to the races.

With the success of the Arlington Million (then the only Thoroughbred race to offer a $1 million purse), the Breeders’ Cup began in 1984. Although the $3 million Classic drew the legendry gelding John Henry, he had to be scratched due to injury. But the First Juvenile Colts featured the future 1985 Kentucky Derby winner, Spend A Buck, even though he finished third.

As the years went by, the Breeders’ Cup Classic became the focal point for determining Horse of the Year honors as well as drawing horses from Japan, Europe and even the Middle East. The most spectacular upset was the French colt Arcangues, who won at odds of 133 – 1.

Another feature of the Breeders’ Cup was that, like the Olympics, it would go to different tracks every year. In that way, a chance to see racing’s finest were open to more people who may otherwise stay home from their local tracks. It also gave tracks in North America a chance to shine and an infusion of much-needed cash. The 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs promises to continue this spectacular sporting history.
