The 2010 Ryder Cup, which will be played from October 1-3rd in Newport, South Wales, will feature the United States defending their 2008 title against Europe. That Ryder Cup featured the U.S. winning by their largest margin in 27 years. Now, back on their home turf, the Europeans will be hoping to regain the cup and extend their recent dominance; even including the U.S.’s 2008 victory, the Europeans have won five of the last seven times.
Both teams will feature many players new to Ryder Cup play. Of the announced U.S. players, four have never played in the Ryder Cup before and three are under 30. The Europeans feature six Ryder Cup rookies, with six under the age of 30, including the tournament’s youngest player, Rory McIlroy, who is 21.
The U.S. team, captained by Cory Pavin, currently features eight players; Pavin will pick the remaining four by September 7th. There has been great speculation about Tiger Woods, who is suffering from an off year, being picked for the team. Current team members have won a total of 72 PGA tour events, including five majors. Among the more notable players are Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, and Steve Strickler. One of the more unusual team members is Jeff Overton, who is the first American to be selected for the Ryder Cup that has not won a PGA tour event.
The European team, whose remaining members were chosen by team captain Colin Montgomerie on August 29th, highlights players who have won 87 European Tour events, 12 PGA tour events, and five majors. European team members include Lee Westwood, Miguel Jimenez, and Padraig Harrington. The team also features brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari.
