The Super Bowl has turned into one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. Millions of viewers tune in to watch the game whether they are fans of football or not. This article is not targeted to the millions of viewers who do not care about the game they are watching, this is for the real fans. The football season kicks off this week giving all fans a little hope that they will be tuning Super Bowl Sunday watching their favorite team. The truth be told, only a few teams really have a shot at making the Super Bowl.

One the team that should be as good, if not better than last year, is the Green Bay Packers who are the favorites to win the NFC North. The Packers won the title last year by putting up one of the most dominating second halves of all time. Aaron Rogers proved why he should have been the first pick when he came out of college, I am sure the Niners wish they could do that over again, by putting up Hall of Fame numbers. The Packers defense was just as good as their offense and that should not be any different this year. If anything, the Packers are going to be better than last year due to the fact they did have a number of injuries that hurt their depth chart. Those players are healthy and ready to contribute to one of the best teams in the league.

A team that will be challenging the Packers for the NFC title this year is the Philadelphia Eagles whoa re the favorites currently for the NFC EAST. The Eagles had one of the most productive off-seasons by signing some of the most desired free agents available. A few of the new names on the Eagles roster that fans are looking forward to include: Nnamdi Asomugha, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Cullen Jenkins. The Eagles have already started calling themselves the Dream Team, so they might be over confident going into the season. Ask Lebron how that turned out in Miami. The Eagles still have serious holes at linebacker and on the offensive line.

There are a few other teams that might contend. Both New York Teams will better this year. The Saints have a shot as long as their defense can keep up with elite offenses around the league. A couple sleeper picks this year should include the Colts, Rams, Cardinals and the Chiefs. All are long shots.

No Super Bowl prediction would seem right without mentioning the New England Patriots who are the AFC EAST favorites. The Patriots have not actually won a Super Bowl since the 2005 season but are in contention every year. The Patriots window is about to slam shut so this year is really important for Tom Brady and friends. The Patriots made a few additions to the roster this year but one is going to get more headlines than any else, Chad Johnson (or whatever he goes by now). The outspoken receiver needs to produce or shut up this season. Fans are tired of his games and New England is one of the best run franchises in the league. If he fails in New England it might be time for him to walk away. Along with Johnson, another addition to the roster is DE Shaun Ellis. He should add a much needed pass rush to the D this year.

While the team discussed above are the most likely to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, the games are what decides who wins and who go home in defeat. Picking pre-season favorites is a little more accurate than just pulling names out of a hat. There are many things that can go wrong during a season. A QB goes down with a season ending injury, the team's top RB tears a hamstring or your best lineman goes missing the night of the big game. Too many things can happen and that is why you play the games. One thing is certain this football year, the season starts this Thursday.
