Argentina Club League - Top Division Description.
The First Division of Argentina is organized by the Argentine Football Association. The Argentine Soccer season in divided in two tournaments: Apertura Tournament (held at the second half of the year), and Clausura (played in the first half the following year). Both tournaments involve twenty teams.
This championship is the third best league in the world as ranked officially by the International Federation of History and Statistics Football (IFFHS). To this date, the league teams have won 61 international official titles at club level, becoming the league with more achievements in this field worldwide.
Every tournament, dozens of players emerge from the Primera Division to swell other leagues in the world, such as the Spanish league, Serie A Italiana, English Premier League, or the Bundesleague. These players also migrate to American and Asian countries as well.
The most important match in the Primera Division Argentina is the classic between River Plate and Boca Juniors. There are other very important "classics" too in this league like Independiente vs. Racing, Huracan vs. San Lorenzo, Banfield vs. Lanus, among a few others.
Overall, the team with most titles in the Argentinean Soccer League is River Plate with 33, followed by Boca Juniors with 23. Then, we have Independiente with 14, San Lorenzo with 10, and Velez Sarsfield and Racing Club with 7, and the rest of the teams with less than 5 titles.
Currently, the year's two champions (one for each tournament) are classified to represent Argentina to the Copa Libertadores each year. Also, the two highest scores in the overall standings for the annual positions (except champions). The third team with most points is classified to the preliminary stage.
To determine the classified clubs for the Copa Sudamericana, the league classifies the first six clubs in the table general of each current season.
