Brazils Serie A, known as the Brasileirao, has a relatively short history. Despite Brazils tradition of world-class soccer, an official national first division was not established until 1971. However, the establishment of this national first division was plagued for years by strange point systems and often times nonsensical rules regarding the promotion and relegation of teams between divisions. Although most of these problems have been resolved, there some still remain. One of the only constants had been the Octagonal, a postseason format where the top 8 teams from the regular season took part in a playoff, ending with a championship game. However, since 2003, the Brasileirao has not used a playoff system and has instead used a system similar to that of several European leagues. Rather than having playoffs, the champion is instead the team with the most points an the conclusion of the season.

The first division is currently comprised of 20 teams. Although the Serie A is generally a well-balanced tournament, there are a few teams that have established themselves as traditional powers: Sao Paulo, Flamengo, Corinthians, Palmeiras, and Vasco da Gama. These 5 clubs have combined to win 23 championships. Among these teams are also found some of Serie A s top rivalries, including Palmeiras vs. Sao Paulo, Flamengo vs. Vasco da Gama, and perhaps the biggest rivalry of all, Corinthians vs. Palmeiras.

At the conclusion of the Serie A season, the top 3 clubs qualify for the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, South Americas equivalent of the UEFA Champions League. The fourth place team goes to playoff a game against another South American club, with the winner earning entrance into the Copa Libertadores tournament.
