Last season saw the return of the Bundesliga's elite to the top of the table. However, there were several teams within striking distance, and with a few adjustments, any one of those teams could dethrone the champions in the upcoming season.
WERDER BREMEN
Despite finishing last season with 71 goals, second only to Bayern Munich's 72, Werder Bremen finished will a goal differential of only +31. Werder Bremen must find a defensive performance to match that of their championship-caliber attack. If Werder Bremen are able to shore up their defense, they will be a serious contender for the title.
BAYERN MUNICH
Bayern Munich combined the league's top offense and defense to win last season's title. Although they will be returning most of that championship team this season, they will be without injured star Arjen Robben until at least January of 2011. If they can make up for this loss, they will be in prime position to repeat as champions.
SCHALKE 04
Schalke 04 already has a championship-caliber defense. However, they will need find an offensive punch to match their defense. If they do, they will be able to take some of the points they dropped last season in a total of 8 draws. Turning those matches into 3 points instead of one will go a along way towards a championship.
BAYERN LEVERKUSEN
Bayern Leverkusen finished a frustrating '09-'10 in 4th place, 2 points behind Werder Bremen. Despite scoring 65 goals last season, Leverkusen finished with a only a +27 goal differential and a stunning 14 draws. Any improvement on the defensive end will immediately guarantee Leverkusen more points and will move them up the standings.
