Germany Professional Football League Description - Bundesliga
Bundesliga is the premier professional football league in Germany. Actually, Bundesliga 1 is the top level league, represented by 18 German clubs who play each other on home-and-away basis. Bundesliga is no ordinary league as it currently stands at number two spot, behind Spanish league, in rankings of the top football leagues in Europe. Historically, Bundesliga has retained such high distinction throughout its formation.
Formation
Interestingly, it took some time for Germany to create a single unified league that would present top German players on an International level. Before the formation of Bundesliga, German club hierarchy was poorly structured which led to the demise of this great footballing nation. It was only after the quarterfinal defeat in 1962 by Chile that inspired German think-tanks to consider forming a compact league on par with other European nations.
Present Structure
Since its formation, Bundesliga has evolved into the most well attended football league in the World with an average attendance surpassing 42,000 mark in 2009-2010 season. The average attendance in a Bundesliga 1 match is only exceeded by two other non-soccer leagues, worldwide. Unlike its counterparts in neighboring countries, the league is dominated by FC Bayern Munich which has won 21 titles since the competition started in 1963.
Despite the overwhelming dominance of FC Bayern Munich, it should be noted that numerous other clubs continue to challenge the club’s authority on a regular basis. Consider the fact that almost four different German clubs, other than Bayern Munich have won the league competition in the last nine years. This new found diversity may be a result of players joining from former East Germany. Nevertheless, the top two teams in the competition qualify to play UEFA Champions League.
